A national conference charting a brighter future for young February
5–8, 2003 It seems to be all people talk about today—the news about war, corporate scandals, fires, and a plunging stock market. But amid all this bad news, if you know where to look, you’ll find it: hope. In large cities and small communities around the country, young Latinos have been quietly creating a nation of hope.
Working with community-based organizations around the country, young Latinos are succeeding, slowly but surely improving upon the conditions of the last century. It’s a long process, but if you look carefully you can see it—persistence, courage, vision, initiative. These words conjure an image of strength and beauty, an almost mythic person who gets the job done no matter what barriers get in the way. There are many such people working in communities, and we’re celebrating their achievements.
Every two years, the National Latino Children’s Institute gathers the best and the brightest from around the country and honors the work of people who day in and day out achieve the nearly impossible—with few resources, many obstacles, and not enough time to do everything that must be accomplished. They know it takes lots of people to put hope back into a community, to provide young people with the opportunities, the support, and the little boost that helps them succeed.
The La Promesa de un Futuro Brillante Award was created to highlight the exemplary programs that work with young Latinos. We invite you to come and learn about the issues, meet with young Latinos, and celebrate the groups that, together with young people, are building this nation of hope. Sponsored
