
It’s what we want for all children, yet it’s out of reach for so many young Latinos. While demographics weave a tale of woe, every day young Latinos defy the odds. Across the country, organizations are building healthy communities and making families strong, keeping young Latinos in school, opening the doors to college and creating opportunities.
These community leaders have long known the secret to developing and implementing programs that are making a difference in the lives of Latino children. These successful programs routinely integrate a child’s cultural heritage, home language and family traditions. For example, along the US-Mexico border, bilingual promotoras provide parents prevenitive health care information, Across the country, Latino community based organizations are teaching children and their families the importance of making healthy food choices and increasing their physical activity through NLCI’s Salsa, Sabor y Salud Program. Many organizations annually hold El Dίa de Los Niños celebrations. Increasingly Migrant Head Start Centers are engaging more parents in their child’s education.
The National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI) mission is to focus the nation’s attention on the contributions and challenges of young Latinos by advocating for their success and well-being through partnerships and programs. NLCI was founded in 1997 and is the only national Latino organization whose primary focus is Hispanic children birth-18. NLCI carries out its mission by working with La Promesa Network and other partners.
NLCI has identified more than100 of these exemplary community organizations, and we’re looking for more. We seek to bring together like minded leaders and organization who share our concerns and optimism for Latino children and youth. We invite you to become a part of something bigger and connect with fellow Latino leaders, share challenges and best practices and be a part of a national strategic dialogue where we can become more effective advocates for Latino communities across the U.S.
